The English Community Care Association (ECCA), the leading representative body for independent care providers, has endorsed the Coalition Government’s programme for health and social care. Martin Green, Chief Executive of ECCA, says:“The Coalition Government has brought together some of the positive elements of both parties’ manifestos and sets a clear direction for delivering quality health and social care. The social care sector is ready to work cooperatively, creatively and dynamically across the whole system to innovate and deliver high quality care for service users and efficiency and outcomes for the system.” Notes to Editors: - ECCA works to ensure that care services are commissioned fairly, efficiently and on a properly funded basis, to meet the true costs of providing appropriate care

Changes to CQC assessment of adult social care: quality ratings phased out from 1 July 2010 |
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is currently registering more than 24,000 adult social care establishments under teh Health and Social Care Act 2008. In parallel, CQC is phasing out quality ratings ("star ratings") for adult social care providers. Between now and 30 September 2010, CQC will meet its legal obligations to carry out planned inspections under the Care Standards Act. These will be bought forward and should be delivered by 30 June 2010. From 1 July, no new quality ratings wil be awarded as a result of inspections, other than in cases where CQCidentifies serious risks to people who use seervices. CQC will continue to display quality ratings on its website, clealry stating the date that these were awarded. CQC is working to make sure that people who use care services get information about providers from 1 October based on outcomes of the registration process. The design of a new sysem to assess quality will be collaborative effort. This will involve providers, commissioners, people who use services, their carers and other interested parties in its design. CQC has written out to all providders, councils and PCTs with details of the process. You can find more information on their website www.cqc.org.uk |

The English Community Care Association (ECCA), the leading representative body for independent care providers, has expressed disappointment at the announcement by the Care Quality Commission that they will be phasing out star ratings sooner than they had suggested in their published timescales. Martin Green, Chief Executive of ECCA, says: “The CQC has told providers that it is interested in quality and yet today we have seen it bring forward the abolition of the star ratings system without a clearly defined timescale for its replacement. The manner of this announcement, the lack of consultation, and the fact that CQC is not even adhering to its own published timescale gives us grave concern about its commitment to quality and its understanding and engagement with the social care sector.” |

Accessing healthcare services for older residents survey |
The Older Peoples Specialists’ Forum (OPSF), a group of healthcare professionals specialising in the care of older people, has launched a short survey aimed at care home managers to find out about care homes’ experiences of accessing healthcare services for their older residents, including how much contact they have with specialist healthcare professionals, with a view to improving the level of support the care home sector receives from the NHS and local authorities. The survey is quick to complete and ECCA encourages its members to respond. To access the survey click here: http://www.bgsnet.org.uk/surveys/opsf/opsf.asp |
