IMMEDIATE RELEASE 13 May 2009
The English Community Care Association (ECCA), the leading representative body for independent care providers, has commented on the new minimum wage level.
Martin Green, Chief Executive of ECCA, says: “The Low Pay Commission took on board ECCA’s submission that a large increase in the minimum wage would place significant strain on providers. In our evidence to the Commission we reinforced that providers want to pay much higher salaries and wages for their dedicated staff, but because of chronic underfunding by local authorities this was not possible”.
Martin Green continues: “What we need is a robust cost of care exercise as the basis for establishing the true cost of care and we believe local authorities should ensure that providers are resourced to enable the same level of wages and support that exists in the public sector to be rolled into independent care services”.

Notes to Editors:
ECCA works to ensure that care services are commissioned fairly, efficiently and on a properly funded basis, to meet the true costs of providing appropriate care
