Ageism and Health

The English Community Care Association (ECCA), the leading representative body for independent care homes, has responded to the British Geriatric Society’s report that has identified deep-seated ageism in healthcare.

Martin Green, Chief Executive of ECCA, says:

“A recent report by ECCA found that many care homes have to pay for GP services.  This is yet another manifestation of the ageism that is at the heart of the health system.  Why should older people in care settings have to pay to access GP services which should be available as of right to every citizen?”

Martin Green continues:

“I have never seen children being required to pay for primary care services so why do you have to when you get older?”
