The English Community Care Association (ECCA), the leading representative body for independent care providers, has today outlined the implications of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust report on the numbers of people affected by dementia in the UK. Martin Green, Chief Executive of ECCA, says: “This report clearly highlights that we have a major challenge in the future if we are going to deliver high quality care to people with dementia. The scale and nature of this challenge is enormous and we cannot wait until the issue has become a crisis before we act”.
Martin Green continues: “The National Dementia Strategy has made an excellent start in providing a framework for care and support, but we need good coordination of services and a clear directive to PCTs that the money given for the Strategy must support direct services and not pad their own bureaucracies. The complexity of the services required to support people with severe dementias means that we must have a proper and planned approach to community support and residential care, both of which will be needed to deliver quality care in the future.” Notes to Editors:
- ECCA works to ensure that care services are commissioned fairly, efficiently and on a properly funded basis, to meet the true costs of providing appropriate care
